It’s been a while since the subject of driverless cars hit the headlines for anything but entirely the wrongreasons. Following a raft of unfortunate incidents and at least a handful of fatalities, it seemed as if the days of driverless cars were over before they even began.

Apparently not, as stirrings from the UK government suggest we could be seeing automated vehicles on UK roads by the end of the year. And by automated vehicles, we mean 100% automated – with absolutely no requirement for a human overseer.

News that isn’t likely to go down well with critics, who insist that driverless vehicle technology is still far from safe to even be trialled on public roads.  Cries echoed by concerned parties on both sides of the Atlantic, with less than a year having passed since a driverless vehicle was blamed for killing a woman in the United States.

Still, the Department of Transport has stated that rigorous screening processes and strict application requirements will ensure that companies are indeed in a position where their technology can safely be tested. Advocates insist that unless additional efforts are made to both trial and improve automated vehicle technology, the whole thing will remain stalled indefinitely.

Not that this would disappoint critics, for whom the idea of automated vehicles should be written off both immediately and indefinitely.

Take My Scrap Car

Here at Take My Scrap Car, we’re still firmly on the fence about the whole thing. On one hand, you could (quite rightly) argue that automated vehicle technology really isn’t at a stage where it’s completely safe to use on public roads. But at the same time, you could also argue that millions of drivers aren’t really safe to be out and about in public either.

Still, it’s technically unlikely that we’ll be seeing any big changes in the UK by the end of 2019. Even if testing initiatives are brought into action, it could be years or even decades before automated vehicles are commercially available and in widespread use. So irrespective of your feelings on the whole thing, it’s not something you need to worry or even think about for the time being!
