As you probably know by now, the British MOT system recently underwent its biggest overhaul in several years. The idea being that the new-generation MOT would more effectively and efficiently detect potentially dangerous issues, ensuring unsafe cars are not allowed on public roads.

Or at least, not legally.

The new rules came into effect back in May, prompting panic among millions of drivers with questionable cars. Right on cue, reports would seem to suggest that the new rules have led to a massive spike in MOT failures.

In fact, some are reporting an increase in MOT failure rates of almost 25%.

As far as the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, the new standards are not only necessary, but beneficial for everyone. Advocates insist that there’s no such thing as being too careful when it comes to road safety.

By contrast, critics have lashed out at the new rules, labelling them excessive and unnecessary. Irrespective of personal opinions, anyone caught driving a vehicle without a valid MOT is now liable for points on their licence and a fine of up to £2,500.

New Checks Introduced

The complete 2018 MOT rulebook is more complex than ever before. Most of the checks carried out are all about common sense safety, while others could potentially penalise drivers with entirely optional features.

For example, if your vehicle has headlight washers which don’t work properly, this could affect the result. Despite the fact that most vehicles on the road don’t have headlight washers at all.

In addition, MOT tests on diesel cars can be declared instant failures if there is visible smoke of any colour coming from the exhaust. On all cars across the board, simple underinflation of the tyres can also result in a failed test. This, despite the fact that correcting the issue would take about 30 seconds on the day.

Incredibly, countless motorists are still failing their MOTs by simply turning up on the day with cars that are too filthy to inspect. From dirty lights to obscured licence plates to hygiene issues on their respective interiors, MOT inspectors can instantly fail cars that are in need of a good clean. Despite all the on-going warnings issued to date, the message doesn’t seem to have hit home just yet.
